Aquino as President of the Republic of the Philippines (1986-1992), restored democracy and after re-establishing all the democratic institutions, she made them work fully so as to bring about substantive economic and social reforms. She presided over the difficult transition from a dictatorship to a democracy, but by her courage she was able to cap her term successfully with a peaceful transfer of power to her successor, President Fidel V. Ramos, after a clean and fair presidential election.

Cory Aquino was widowed of Sen. Benigno S. Aquino, Jr. who became a martyr for democracy on August 21, 1983 when he was assassinated at the Manila International Airport. Sen. Aquino was the leader of the Opposition at the time of his martyrdom. He had been jailed upon the declaration of the martial law in 1972. His incarceration lasted seven years and seven months. He was given temporary freedom only because he had to undergo heart surgery in the United States.

Normal professional twenty-something young women don't get visited by ghosts. Or do they?

When the spirit of Lara's great-aunt Sadie—a feisty, demanding girl with firm ideas about fashion, love, and the right way to dance-mysteriously appears, she has one last request: Lara must find a missing necklace that had been in Sadie's possession for more than seventy-five years, and Sadie cannot rest without it. Lara, on the other hand, has a number of ongoing distractions. Her best friend and business partner has run off to Goa, her start-up company is floundering, and she's just been dumped by the "perfect" man.

Lara and Sadie make a hilarious sparring duo, and as the mission to find Sadie's necklace leads to intrigue and a new romance for Lara, these very different "twenties" girls learn some surprising truths from each other along the way. Written with all the irrepressible charm and humor that have made Sophie Kinsella's books beloved by millions, Twenties Girl is also a deeply moving testament to the transcendent bonds of friendship and family.

In her small Wisconsin hometown, she learns the virtues of politeness, but a tragic accident when she is seventeen shatters her identity and changes the trajectory of her life. More than a decade later, when the charismatic son of a powerful Republican family sweeps her off her feet, she is surprised to find herself admitted into a world of privilege. And when her husband unexpectedly becomes governor and then president, she discovers that she is married to a man she both loves and fundamentally disagrees with–and that her private beliefs increasingly run against her public persona. As her husband’s presidency enters its second term, Alice must confront contradictions years in the making and face questions nearly impossible to answer.

The Gatecrasher

Madeleine Wickham

P669

Take a wild and marvelous ride with The Gatecrasher, whose clever, chic, and sassy style will leave you desperately wanting more wonderful Wickham! Everything’s coming up roses for Fleur Daxeny, as she goes through more rich men than she does designer hats. Fleur wastes no time in seducing her latest conquest, the handsome and rich widower Richard Favour. Fleur is not one to wear her heart on her Chanel sleeves, but she soon finds herself embracing Richard and his family. But just as Fleur contemplates jumping off the gold-digger train for good, a long-buried secret from her past threatens to destroy her new family.

SPOILED

Caitlyn Macy

P1009

Now, in Caitlyn Macy’s sophisticated and provocative story collection Spoiled, she turns her unsparing eye on affluent and educated women who nevertheless struggle to keep their footing in their relationships and life. Macy's voice is as straightforward as it is original in these stories, and her characters deftly nuanced. Full of surprising, sometimes shocking insights and simmering with outrage, compassion, and humor, Spoiled is a remarkable collection from a boldly talented writer.

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="country-region"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place" downloadurl="http://www.5iantlavalamp.com/"></o:smarttagtype>

The Girl Who Played With Fire

Stieg Larsson

P499

The electrifying follow-up to the phenomenal best seller The Girl with the Dragon and this time it is Lisbeth Salander, the troubled, wise-beyond-her-years genius hacker, who is the focus and fierce heart of the story. Mikael Blomkvist has decided to publish a story exposing an extensive sex trafficking operation between Eastern Europe and Sweden, implicating well-known and highly placed members of Swedish society, business, and government. On the eve of publication, the two reporters responsible for the story are brutally murdered. But perhaps more shocking for Blomkvist: the fingerprints found on the murder weapon belong to Lisbeth Salander. Now, as Blomkvist—alone in his belief in her innocence—plunges into his own investigation of the slayings, Salander is drawn into a murderous hunt in which she is the prey, and which compels her to revisit her dark past in an effort to settle with it once and for all.

In One Fifth Avenue, Bushnell tells the intertwined stories of five women at one swanky Manhattan address. On Fifth is The Building—the chicest, the hottest, the one with the best pedigree, the one with all the most interesting people. And within its gorgeous, thick, pre-war walls, fortunes fall and rise in the early days of the new millennium. As in her previous novels, Bushnell turns a gimlet eye on the social and sexual politics of elite New Yorkers and taps uncannily into the zeitgeist of our changing times.

Bled Dry: A Tale of Vegas Vampires

Erin McCarthy

P335

Hooking up with a vampire has its risks—but getting pregnant usually isn't one of them. Tell that to Brittany Baldizzi, who finds herself in the family way with no father in sight. After their one night of passion, vampire Corbin Jean Michel Atelier disappeared off the face of the earth—or at least off the Vegas Strip... Corbin is a vampire with a cause—he is secretly trying to find a cure for his condition. Between them, nothing but twelve miles of empty road. Jack Reacher can’t find a ride, so he walks. All he wants is a cup of coffee. What he gets are four hostile locals, a vagrancy charge, and an order to move on. They’re picking on the wrong guy. Reacher is a hard man. No job, no address, no baggage. Nothing at all, except hardheaded curiosity. What are the secrets that Despair seems so desperate to hide? With just one ally—a mysterious woman cop from Hope—and many enemies, Reacher goes up against a whole town, hunting the rich man at its core, cracking open his terrifying agenda, asking the question: Who has the edge—a man with everything to gain, or a man with nothing to lose?

HOW THE SOLDIER REPAIRS THE GRAMOPHONE

Saša Stanišić

P275

or young Aleksandar—the best magician in the non-aligned states and painter of unfinished things—life is endowed with a mythic quality in the Bosnian town of Višegrad, a rich playground for his imagination. Filled with rage over his betrayal, Anya discovers an even stronger emotion is consuming her mind and body. Though Del-Ray feels it with the same intensity, Anya questions whether she can forgive or trust him again.

Seventeen-year-old Ever survived the car crash that killed her
parents, younger sister, and their dog. Now she lives with an aunt in
Southern California, plagued not only by survivor guilt but also by a new
ability to hear the thoughts of all around her. She tries to tune out all
these distractions by keeping her hoodie up and her iPod cranked loud, until
Damen, the cute new boy at school, convinces her to come out of her shell.
Damen, however, is frighteningly clever—and has the strange ability to
produce tulips from nowhere and disappear himself at critical moments. Noël
creates a cast of recognizably diverse teens in a realistic high-school
setting, along with just the right tension to make Ever’s discovery of her
own immortality—should she choose it—exciting and credible.

But when it comes to love stories, things are simpler. A love story can never be about full possession. Love stories depend on disappointment, on unequal births and feuding families, on matrimonial boredom and at least one cold heart. Love stories, nearly without exception, give love a bad name . . . .

It is perhaps only in reading a love story (or in writing one) that we can simultaneously partake of the ecstasy and agony of being in love without paying a crippling emotional price. I offer this book, then, as a cure for lovesickness and an antidote to adultery. Read these love stories in the safety of your single bed. Let everybody else suffer."—Jeffrey Eugenides, from the introduction to My Mistress's Sparrow Is Dead

All proceeds from My Mistress's Sparrow is Dead will go directly to fund the free youth writing programs offered by 826 Chicago. 826 Chicago is part of the network of seven writing centers across the United States affiliated with 826 National, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

Lavender Morning
Jude Deveraux
P599.00

Jocelyn Minton is a woman torn between two worlds. Her mother grew up attending private schools and afternoon teas, but she married the local handyman. After her mother died when Joce was only five years old, her father remarried into his own class, and Joce became an outsider—until she met Edilean Harcourt. Although she was sixty years Joce’s senior, Miss Edi was a kindred soul and understood her like no one else ever had.

When Edilean passes away, she leaves Joce all her worldly possessions, including an eighteenth-century house and a letter with clues to a mystery that began in 1941. In the letter, Miss Edi also mentions that she has found the perfect man for Joce—a handsome young lawyer. Joce is shocked to learn that the mystery, the house, and the future love of her life are all in Edilean, a small town in Virginia that Miss Edi never told her about. Hurt that the woman who meant so much to her kept so many secrets, Jocelyn moves to this tight-knit village in an attempt to understand the legacy that has been left to her. As she begins to dig into Miss Edi’s mystery, she soon discovers some shocking surprises about her family’s history and her own future—and she meets a man with his own mysterious past.

Careless in Red
Elizabeth George
P315.00

He found the body on the forty-third day of his walk…

Devastated by the senseless murder of his wife, Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley retreated to Cornwall, where he has spent six solitary weeks hiking the bleak and rugged coastline. But no matter how far he walks, the painful memories do not diminish.

Then, at the base of a cliff near a town better known for its surfing than its intrigue, Lynley discovers the body of a young man who has fallen to his death. First a witness, then a suspect when the hand of a killer is revealed, Lynley remains, above all, a policeman willing to aid the gruff head of an understaffed local constabulary in her investigation. But the secrets in this community run dark and deep—and Lynley must somehow find a way to let go of the past long enough to solve a most devious and dreadful crime.

When You Are Engulfed In Flames

David Sedaris

P355.00

David Sedaris’s remarkable ability to uncover the hilarious absurdity teeming just below the surface of everyday life is elevated to wilder and more entertaining heights than ever in this new book of essays.

Sedaris proceeds from the bizarre conundrums of daily life—the proper etiquette to follow when a lozenge falls from your mouth into the lap of a fellow airplane passenger or how to use LP covers to soundproof your windows against neurotic songbirds—to the most deeply resonant human truths. Taking in the parasitic worm that once lived in his mother-in-law’s leg, an encounter with a dingo, and the purchase of a human skeleton, and culminating in a brilliant account of his attempt to quit smoking—in Tokyo—David Sedaris’s sixth collection is a fresh masterpiece of comic writing.

The Gargoyle: A Novel
Andrew Davidson
P335.00

On a dark road in the middle of the night, a car plunges down into a ravine. The driver survives the crash, but suffers horrible burns over much of his body. As he recovers in the hospital, planning his suicide, a strange woman appears at the foot of his bed, insisting she saved his life a century ago. Spanning medieval Germany, Japan, Iceland, and beyond, The Gargoyle is a mesmerizing novel of death, history, obsession, and faith.
